Willowbrook and Villa Park Public Library present Engineering Club

When walking into the youth section of the Villa Park Public Library on Jan. 17, you were greeted by a scene of students building structures out of spaghetti noodles, marshmallows, string and tape.

The activity was part of the Engineering Club, which is being led by Willowbrook math teacher Josh Zwart and Willowbrook Career and Technical Education (CTE) teacher Kevin Quinn. The club is presented by the library and Willowbrook. The goal of the program is to introduce students in sixth through eighth grades to the fields of engineering – mechanical, chemical, civil, electrical and management.

The club will take place once a month through April, and participants will learn about the various concepts of engineering by completing fun, hands-on activities. Below are the event details.

  • 4 to 5 p.m. on Feb. 21: 3-D printer showcase/build a paper bridge challenge
  • 4 to 5 p.m. on March 21: Build a battery, build series and parallel circuits, use a Makey Makey, and build a truss
  • 4 to 5 p.m. on April 18: Truss testing and an oil spill cleanup

Where: Villa Park Public Library, 305 S. Ardmore Ave. in Villa Park
