Willowbrook hosts inaugural Cardboard Regatta

On May 21, about 100 students in Willowbrook’s Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level Physics 1 and Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level Physics 2 classes participated in the school’s inaugural Cardboard Regatta at the Addison Park District Family Aquatic Center.

Students built boats out of cardboard and tape and raced 50 yards from one end of a pool to the other. The goal was for participants to apply physics knowledge from Newton's Laws, center of gravity and fluid dynamics.

From the AP Physics 1 class, the team of junior Shalyn Cherniavskyj, senior Brooke Bimber and senior Jessica Cookingham had the fastest boat. From the AP Physics 2 class, the team of seniors Matthew D'Alessandro, Gideon Karasek, Jacob Seymore and Muhammad Shahzad had the fastest boat. The most durable boat was built and raced by juniors Amos Cabudol, Brandon Calabrese, Alex Smith and Tj Geritano.
