Counseling Corner: Willowbrook Guidance Department shares information about Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level exams

Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level exams are rigorous, multiple-component tests that are administered at high schools each May. High school students can earn college credit, placement, or both for qualifying AP exam scores. Each AP exam has a corresponding AP course and provides a standardized measure of what students have learned in that class.

AP exams are an essential part of the AP course experience and help students:

  • Stand out in the college admission process
  • Earn academic scholarships and awards from colleges and universities
  • Experience college-level academics while in high school
  • Save time and money in college, providing them with more study options and allowing them to move directly into upper-level courses in their field of interest
  • Earn AP Scholar Awards, an academic distinction granted each September by College Board to students with exemplary AP exam scores

This school year, Willowbrook will offer 19 AP exams. Students enrolled in AP courses can buy the exams from March 9 to 20 in the bookstore. The cost for each exam is $91. To help prepare students for the AP exams, there will be a mandatory pre-administration session during Warrior Time on April 15 in the cafeteria. All students who plan to take an AP exam are required to attend.

For more information about AP exams, go to http://tinyurl.com/mxwc38f. On that website, students can search for their college or potential college and get a list of the scores they need to earn on their AP exams to earn college credit.

Final instructions will be sent to AP teachers before the testing dates. Those instructions will include the exact time and location of each exam.
