Winter sports heat up at Addison Trail

It might be the winter season for sports, but Addison Trail athletics is certainly heating up! Our Blazers continue to perform well, and below are highlights from the season.

Girls Gymnastics
The Girls Gymnastics Varsity Team is undefeated (5-0) in Conference. The team scored a season high of 136.9 against Downers Grove South in the last Conference meet. The team tied for the West Suburban Gold Conference championship. The last conference title for the team was won in 1997.

Boys Basketball
The team has been very competitive all year, losing several close games in the closing seconds. The seniors have provided solid leadership and have been excellent role models for the other players. The team is currently 4-2 in Conference (2nd place). Senior James Pupillo was recently named as a Suburban Life Media Player of the Week, and he also was named the All-Tournament Player in the West Chicago Tournament. He and senior Ronald Duling were named All-Tournament Players at the Addison Trail Tournament as well.

Cheerleading
This year was an amazing year for the varsity team. For many, it was their first year, as the varsity team included two freshmen and five male athletes who had never cheered before. The team brought home hardware, placing 4th in the Coed Division at the Illinois Cheerleading Coaches Association (ICCA) Championship and made history for Addison Trail. The team overcame many obstacles and came out on top. The varsity team is getting ready for the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Sectionals on Feb. 1 at Rolling Meadows High School.

Wrestling
On Jan. 30, the team won the West Suburban Gold Conference Championship. The team also placed 4th out of 16 teams at the Prospect Tournament, 3rd out of 17 teams at the Lake Park Tournament, 1st out of eight teams at the Glenbard West Tournament and 3rd out of 19 teams at the Batavia Tournament. Tournament Champions are senior Bobby Carson (Prospect Tournament); Carson and senior Niko Rocha (Lake Park Tournament); Carson, Rocha, junior Mike Huynh, senior Erick De La Cruz, junior Stephen Hayden and senior Danny Tomasello (Glenbard West Tournament); and Carson, Rocha and senior Gilberto DeLaPaz (Batavia Tournament). Rocha also won the Most Outstanding Wrestler award at the Glenbard West Tournament and the Batavia Tournament.

Way to go, Blazers!
