Willowbrook staff member Rachel Karos is no stranger to women’s football and is a true pioneer for the sport, helping to enhance it throughout Illinois, the U.S. and internationally.

She serves as Head Coach of the Willowbrook Girls Flag Football Team, which continues to make history of its own. In 2022, the team won the inaugural Chicago Bears Girls Flag Football State Championship and followed it up with a regional title in Ohio. In 2023, they placed third at the state championship, solidifying their place as a top-tier program. For her leadership and dedication to the sport, Karos was honored as the inaugural Chicago Bears Flag Football Coach of the Week earlier this school year.

And this season, Karos is taking her passion for the sport even further – serving as backup quarterback for The Chicago Winds, a tackle football team in the Women’s National Football Conference (WNFC). With more than 10 years of experience playing flag football (she plays for the Chicago Surge and also was teammates with Willowbrook alumna Rimon Kari, class of 2023, on The Chicago Winds flag team initially), Karos made the leap to tackle football after being encouraged by a teammate. That decision has opened a new chapter in her athletic journey.

“I love seeing the growth of the game, starting new teams and creating experiences and opportunities,” Karos said. “I want to continue to be part of the development of this sport to prove football is a space for women as well.”

Beyond the thrill of competition, Karos finds purpose in the close-knit, family-like atmosphere of athletics. She also enjoys the physical and mental challenge of being on the field. She has quickly earned the respect of her teammates, who named her as Captain. At this point in her life and athletic journey, Karos said she’s happy to be in a supportive role. Whether it’s offering guidance from the sidelines, pushing her teammates, or stepping in when needed, she finds fulfillment in contributing to the team’s success in whatever way needed.

The Chicago Winds practice three times a week in the city and are scheduled to play six regular-season games, both in and out of state. Including potential post-season matchups, the team could play up to 10 games.

Karos said her time with The Chicago Winds has not only made her a better player, but it also is shaping her future. Karos is committed to learning more about the sport and building knowledge and skills to improve as a coach. Karos looks forward to staying connected with the sport she loves in whatever capacity comes her way down the road. Her passion for football and dedication to empowering women and providing them with opportunities are helping to shape a stronger, more inclusive future for the sport.
