Willowbrook Girls Volleyball Head Coach Irene Mason has been selected as a 2023 Girls High School Region Coach of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).
Mason is one of 34 coaches throughout the U.S. to receive the prestigious award this year.
During the 2023 season, Mason led the Warriors to a West Suburban Conference Gold Division Championship, an Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Regional Championship, an IHSA Sectional Championship, an IHSA Super-Sectional Championship, a third-place finish in the IHSA State Finals and a school record of 40 wins. The Willowbrook Girls Volleyball Team also was recently named as one of 10 national finalists for the PrepVolleyball.com Team of the Year recognition.
“Along with her immense knowledge of the sport, Mason goes above and beyond to create a fun, energetic, family atmosphere for all of her student-athletes,” said Ed Sullivan, Willowbrook Athletic Director. “Mason’s support for her student-athletes goes beyond the court, as she constantly provides guidance and wisdom regarding school and life. She creates unique teambuilding activities as well, which have cultivated a culture and climate of success. Mason’s motto is, ‘Think like a champion, act like a champion, be a champion,’ and she reflects that philosophy in all of her actions on a daily basis. The Willowbrook community is so proud of Mason for this amazing accomplishment!”
Mason will be honored during a celebration on Dec. 15 at the 2023 AVCA Convention in Florida. For more information, go to https://www.avca.org/award/2023-girls-high-school-region-coaches-of-the-year/.
