On Oct. 20 and 21, Willowbrook English teacher Jim White (pictured above) was honored by Southern Illinois University as an inductee of the Saluki Hall of Fame class of 2023.
White was recognized as part of the 1983 football team, which finished 13-1 and won the I-AA National Championship. The team outscored opponents during its playoff run 89-21, including a 43-7 win over Western Carolina in the title game. Only one other team has been inducted into the Saluki Hall of Fame – the 1967 NIT Championship squad.
“It was an honor to be part of an outstanding group of people who worked so hard to make (our successful season) happen,” White said of the accomplishment. “It has been 40 years since I last saw some of my teammates. We all appreciated the recognition and shared stories of past and present. Lifelong friendships have been made.”
