Addison Trail students earn world language state and national recognitions

On May 4, Addison Trail recognized 23 students who have earned the State Seal of Biliteracy recognition, as well as 15 students who have earned Commendation toward Biliteracy recognition.

The State Seal of Biliteracy is awarded to graduating high school students who have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in English and in reading, writing, listening and speaking in another language. The State Commendation toward Biliteracy is given to graduating high school students who have demonstrated significant progress toward achieving a high level of proficiency in English and in reading, writing, listening and speaking in another language. The level achieved by a student is determined by that student’s performance on a state-approved standardized assessment to measure English proficiency and proficiency in a foreign language.

The State Seal of Biliteracy and Commendation are placed on the student’s diploma and transcript as an official credential certified by the Illinois State Board of Education. State colleges and universities have the option to accept the State Seal of Biliteracy for college credit. The Addison Trail World Language Department also is proud to share that out of nearly 5,500 students who took the American Association of Teachers of Italian (AATI) National Exam, 18 Addison Trail students received National Honorable Mentions, and 25 were named as Midwest Winners/Midwest Honorable Mentions.

Students are placed into one of three categories – A, B or C. Those in category A have little Italian language experience, while those in B and C have had more exposure and experience with the Italian language. In the Italian 5B category, Addison Trail earned the 1st- through- sixth-place spots.
