Two Addison Trail students have earned Eagle Scout status, the highest rank attainable in Boy Scouts of America.
Those who earn that rank earn at least 21 merit badges and demonstrate Scout Spirit through the Boy Scout Oath and Law, service and leadership, which includes organizing, planning and completing an extensive service project in the community.
District 88 recently spoke with seniors Kannon Nelms and Curtis Fulmer to ask them about their experiences with Boy Scouts, their Eagle Scout projects and what they plan to do in the future.
Senior Kannon Nelms
Troop number: 410
In Boy Scouts of America since: 2005
Received Eagle Scout status: This past fall
Eagle Scout project: I weeded the shot put area and spread limestone; I placed wooden planks on the perimeter of the area; I cleaned up the area, cutting down old soccer posts; and I built a shed for storage behind the shot put area. The project took about four and a half months to complete.
Joined Boy Scouts because: I saw the fun campouts and meetings, and I wanted to experience those as well. I also had friends join.
Future plans: I would like to stay involved with Boy Scouts of America as an Assistant Scoutmaster, helping out whenever I can at meetings. I also plan to attend college and earn my degree in engineering.
Senior Curtis Fulmer
Troop number: 410
In Boy Scouts of America since: 2004 (as a Cub Scout); 2009 (as a Boy Scout)
Received Eagle Scout status: This past fall
Eagle Scout project: I organized a clothing drive for the Addison Community Switchboard to help people who needed clothes for the winter. We collected all kinds of clothing (more than 1,100 articles of clothing). The project took a month and a half to complete.
Joined Boy Scouts because: When I was a Cub Scout, I got to go to events and see some of the things the Boys Scouts learned and the adventures they go on. That inspired me to keep going with Boy Scouts of America.
Future plans: I plan to continue with scouting in any way I can with a local troop. I would like to become an Assistant Scoutmaster. I also plan to attend college and earn my degree in education to become a teacher.
