Counseling Corner: Addison Trail Guidance Department to host College Financial Aid Night

The Addison Trail Guidance Department knows how challenging and overwhelming it can be to pay for college, and that’s why the department will host a College Financial Aid Night starting at 7 p.m. on Oct. 23.

The seminar will be presented by Paul Cozzi with College Planners Inc. Cozzi is not only a registered tax-return preparer, but he also is a member of The National Financial Aid Practitioners Alliance. All parents/guardians are encouraged to attend this informational event. The seminar is designed to show participants how to qualify for as much financial aid as possible through employing sound financial aid-planning principles.

Topics will include:

  • A thorough understanding of the financial aid process – facts versus myths
  • Where parental and student assets should be
  • How income affects aid eligibility
  • The single/divorced/remarried parent dilemma
  • Dependent versus independent
  • The importance of deadlines
  • Shopping financial aid packages

Seniors and their parents/guardians also should be reminded of the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) form that can begin to be completed on Jan. 1, 2015. The Guidance Department will host a parent night on Jan. 29 to discuss the FAFSA, as well as a FAFSA completion assistance event on Feb. 12.

Seniors and their parents/guardians are encouraged to check out Addison Trail’s October scholarship bulletin at http://tinyurl.com/np6rdws and use other resources, including www.fastweb.com, to look for scholarships. For more information, contact the Guidance Department at 630-628-3324.
