For the past nine years, Addison Trail Blazer Football student-athletes have been serving their community by reading to young children at local elementary and junior high schools.
“We send five athletes to each of the seven local elementary and junior high schools,” said Paul Parpet Jr., Addison Trail Head Football Coach. “We try to send the same athletes from week to week, so the kids get familiar with the same faces.”
The Blazer Football Reading Program has followed the same format for several years, and Parpet said he hopes to add to the program in the next couple of years.
“Our next step is to build some Big-Brother-type of activities,” Parpet said. “I would love to see our athletes really engaging with the students, building relationships and acting as strong role models for the kids.”
The Blazer Football Reading Program takes place on the first three Fridays of the month from September to December and from February to May. The following schools participate in the Blazer Football Reading Program: Stone Elementary School, Wesley Elementary School, Fullerton Elementary School, Army Trail Elementary School, Lincoln Elementary School, Lake Park Elementary School and Indian Trail Junior High School.
