Addison Trail students who are enrolled in the school’s Heritage Spanish Language 2 Honors course recently participated in an activity that brought the classroom to life with a unit focused on how each person can contribute to his/her community.
Through that unit lesson, teachers Moncerat Hernández-Granados and Osvaldo Rodríguez emphasized the saying "Mi granito de arena (My small contribution),” as a reminder that everyone plays a part in bringing meaningful and positive change to a community.
The students collected nearly 15,000 pop tabs for the Addison Trail Veterans Support Organization (ATVSO), and that group will give those items to the Ronald McDonald House Pop Tab program. According to https://ronaldmcdonaldhousechicago.org/get-involved/pop-tabs/, “Every tab … helps families stay close to their sick or injured children at the Ronald McDonald House. With help from … United Scrap Metal, each pound of pop tabs and other recycled materials raises an average of $0.55 for Ronald McDonald House Chicagoland & Northwest Indiana.” Read more about the ATVSO at https://www.dupage88.net/site/page/16597.
The experience provided students with an opportunity to embrace the saying “Haz el bien sin mirar a quién (Do good without regard for whom),” reminding them to act with kindness and without expectation.
