Addison Trail students participate in career-exploration field trip

On Oct 22, 11 Addison Trail students participated in a unique and eye-opening field trip organized by the school’s Counseling Department.

The group spent the day visiting three key DuPage County agencies to learn about public safety, criminal justice and emergency response careers.

The day began at the DuPage County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility, where students received a guided tour of the jail, including the booking area and an inside look at a cell. They learned about rehabilitation programs offered to detainees, including classes and vocational training that help individuals prepare for life after incarceration.

Next, the group visited the DuPage County Coroner’s Office. A Coroner’s Deputy provided a presentation about the responsibilities of the office, followed by a tour of the facility, including the morgue and the lab where autopsies are performed. Students gained insight into the science and professionalism involved in this field.

The final stop of the trip was DU-Comm, a 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) responsible for radio communications and dispatch of police, fire and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) for 45 member agencies. Students observed how emergency calls are received and dispatched for most of DuPage County and had an opportunity to watch live 911 calls being handled in real time.

After an engaging day of discovery and exploration, the group enjoyed lunch and reflected on what they saw and learned.
