On Feb. 15, Addison Trail staff member Matt Thompson was recognized and honored for more than 30 years of service to the District 88 learning community. Thompson, who will retire at the end of the 2024-25 school year, was celebrated during the Addison Trail Boys Basketball Team Alumni Game.
Thompson has left a lasting impact on Addison Trail, where he has served in various roles, from coach to administrator. Thompson began his journey with District 88 in 1994-95 as an assistant varsity basketball coach. Throughout his career, Thompson has demonstrated his passion for athletics by coaching multiple sports, including football, basketball, volleyball and cross-country. His leadership and dedication led to his appointment as head basketball coach during the 1996-97 school year.
Thompson also worked as a substitute teacher and a teacher aide. He was named as a dean in 1999-2000 and was promoted to Director of Deans in 2001-02, where he played a crucial part in fostering a positive school environment.
Thompson’s enthusiasm for athletics never waned, and in 2004-05, he took on the role of Athletic Director. He worked tirelessly to enhance the school’s athletic programs, support athletes and coaches, and provide countless opportunities for students to develop their skills on and off the field.
During the basketball game on Feb. 15, Thompson was honored with the following:
“Throughout his tenure, Mr. Thompson has been a driving force behind the success of Addison Trail athletics, shaping programs, mentoring student-athletes and fostering a culture of sportsmanship, teamwork and excellence,” said Addison Trail Principal Jack Andrews. “His passion, leadership and unwavering commitment to the Blazer Nation have left an indelible mark on countless students, coaches and families. Under his guidance, Addison Trail athletics have thrived, creating unforgettable moments and lifelong lessons for all involved."
