Addison Trail student music group performs to celebrate NorteƱo culture

On Jan. 24, Addison Trail students who are part of the music group El Viejon (“The Old Man”) performed during lunch periods in the commons area at the school (pictured at right).

Addison Trail counselor Mario Fernandez said the goal of the event was to highlight the Norteño culture. According to https://scalar.usc.edu/works/music-in-global-america/musica-nortena--tejano-music, “Norteño, also called música norteña, is a popular music genre of Northern Mexico that developed in the late nineteenth century as a mix of regional Mexican music and the folk music of German, Polish and Czech migrant workers and immigrants to Mexico.”

The students who performed are sophomore Elias Aguilar, senior Freddy Ramirez Carbajal and sophomore Rolando Perez Reyes.

District 88 has 51 languages and more than 30 countries represented among its families, and more than half of the nearly 2,000 students at Addison Trail speak a language other than English at home. The district and school embrace that diversity as an asset and focus on advancing excellence for all pupils through cultivating an environment of inclusion and belonging, where all students feel safe, seen, heard, valued and respected.
