Throughout the school year, nine Addison Trail students learned about/experienced various aspects of the state government through participating in the school’s Youth in Government club.
Youth in Government is a simulation of the Illinois General Assembly. Students immerse themselves in experiential civic engagement, debate issues that affect citizens and even propose legislation through taking on the roles of legislators, attorneys, lobbyists and more.
Addison Trail students joined three pre-legislative sessions during the school year at Neuqua Valley and Lake Park high schools to learn about their positions and prepare for the culminating sessions, which took place from March 17 to 19 in Springfield.
“No matter which career you choose, law will most likely be involved at some level,” said members of the Addison Trail Youth in Government club. “It’s important to know about and understand the legal and voting process. Being part of this group builds leadership skills, self-confidence, teamwork and respect for those who serve in legislation. It’s a fun experience.”
