Addison Trail senior Andrea Parent (pictured above) was recently named as a recipient of the Evans Scholarship for caddies.
According to the Evans Scholarship website (http://tinyurl.com/ptoqyxb), applicants must have a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character. The scholarship is awarded from the Evans Scholars Foundation, a charitable trust that provides full, four-year tuition and housing college scholarships to deserving caddies.
Parent has been a caddie at Medinah Country Club in Medinah for four years and said she plans to continue with that position.
“What I enjoy about being a caddie is you get to be outdoors, and you get to meet and make connections with a lot of new people,” Parent said. “It’s a big sacrifice to wake up before 6 a.m. all summer long, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”
Parent said she was thrilled when she found out she received the scholarship to live in the Evans Scholarship House at Miami University in Ohio, where she plans to major in accounting through the Farmer School of Business.
“I started crying with my mom,” Parent said with a laugh. “We were both really happy and relieved.”
And caddying seems to run in the family, as Parent’s older brother Burke (Addison Trail alumnus, class of 2018) also was named as an Evans Scholar. Parent said she has learned many lessons through her time on the golf course.
“Patience and determination are definitely key,” Parent said. “You have to stick with it and stay positive.”
Parent added she couldn’t have achieved this level of success without the help of her family, friends and the staff at Addison Trail – especially Guidance Counselor Shane Cole and English teacher Steve Bruns.
“All the staff members here at Addison Trail have really been there for me and have helped me reach my goals,” Parent said. “I appreciate all their support.”
