Cindy Pham has been named as Addison Trail’s December recipient of 88’s Best recognition for her outstanding academic accomplishments. Pham, a senior, was recognized during the Dec. 16 District 88 Board of Education meeting. To watch Pham’s 88’s Best presentation, click the video above.

Pham is driven by a passion to succeed. She has challenged herself by taking 11 Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level courses and eight honors classes, some of which are the most difficult in the AP offerings. Pham said her parents have inspired her to work hard. They moved to the U.S. from Vietnam to have a better life, and Pham tries every day to make sure she takes full advantage of the opportunities she has been given. She also finds inspiration from her cousin (an Addison Trail graduate), who has pushed her to do her best. Her cousin was the first in her family to go to college, and Pham sees how hard her cousin has worked to continue her education in pharmacy school.

“I am thrilled (Pham) is being recognized as one of AT’s best for academics, as she truly embodies what all students should strive for,” said Carolyn Erwin, Addison Trail science teacher. “Her work in AP Biology is thorough, meticulous and reflective of her incredible intellect. Given that she also is very involved in extracurricular activities and sports, her academic record becomes even more impressive – I am pretty sure she never sleeps! Her poise and maturity, coupled with her fierce work ethic, will ensure her future success.”

Addison Trail science teacher Kira Bonk agreed.

“(Pham) is amazing!” Bonk said. “She is dedicated to academics, but also to making our school a better place. (Pham) is one of the most respectful, humble, kindhearted, bright students I've worked with. I will miss her, but I know she is going to accomplish amazing things after graduation!”

Addison Trail social studies teacher Laura Magnavite said Pham’s ability to lead by example is what makes her stand out.

“As a student in Advanced Placement European History, (Pham) was an absolute joy to have in class,” Magnavite said. “She was intelligent, thoughtful and determined to succeed. She was meticulous about her work, whether it was a daily homework assignment or a research project. (Pham) was always a leader; however, instead of dictating to her group members, she asked questions to move them forward toward achieving their goals. She was a role model of diplomatic, supportive and academically engaged behavior to a class of her sophomore peers, who were still learning these important skills.”

Pham’s outstanding work ethic extends to her extracurricular activities as well. She serves as President of the school’s National Honor Society, Historian for Orchesis, Secretary for Key Club and is a member of Class Board and Student Council. She also is involved in theatre and music. Through her participation in clubs and activities, Pham said she has loved seeing the diversity that epitomizes Addison Trail.

Pham has spent a significant amount of time this fall applying to colleges; her top choices are The University of Texas at Austin and The University of Iowa, and she also has applied to Saint Louis University, Loyola University Chicago and The Ohio State University. She plans to study nursing, in hopes of becoming a nurse practitioner.

  • District 88 values the hard work and achievements of students and wants to make sure students are honored and recognized for their accomplishments. The District 88 Board of Education and administration created the 88’s Best award to highlight students’ success. That award recognizes nine Addison Trail and nine Willowbrook seniors each school year for reaching their personal best in various areas. Recipients are honored during a District 88 Board of Education meeting in one of the following areas: academics, highly improved performance, extracurricular activities, service work or performing arts/electives. They receive an 88’s Best glass sculpture and a certificate to a local restaurant.
