If you’ve stopped by Addison Trail this summer, you might have noticed a new garden near the horticulture greenhouse at the school.
That garden was created by Addison Trail LINK 1 and 2 students during summer school. The students learned about the earth and how to stay healthy. The self-sustaining garden teaches LINK students work skills and provides fresh whole foods for students and staff. The students tore up weeds, bushes and grasses to create the area and planted carrots, tomatoes, zucchini, peas, pumpkins, beets, radish, peppers and onions.
The concept for the garden started with Addison Trail special education teachers and teacher aides Jessica Sokolowski, Melissa Morales, Joanna Kulikowska, Teresa Carreno Estrella, Maryellen Marisie and Karen Pierropoulos.
“It was a lot of hard work – especially in the heat of summer – but they all worked together and got the job done,” Sokolowski said. “They have tended the garden well and have already had some harvests.”
