On May 7, Addison Trail hosted its third annual West Suburban Conference Sports Spectacular.
During the event, more than 460 special-needs students filled Addison Trail’s field house, gyms and tennis court area. The students were from 13 schools in the West Suburban Conference, and they participated in track and field events and a basketball tournament and also enjoyed games and moon jumps.
The Sports Spectacular was founded in 1994 by a group of West Suburban Conference athletic directors. Addison Trail physical education teacher Sheri D’Ambrose wanted to continue the event to offer students an atmosphere of fun. On May 3, D’Ambrose received a Distinguished Service Award from the Illinois Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association (INSPRA), in part for her work with the Sports Spectacular.
D’Ambrose said it took about 100 volunteers (including the Addison Trail maintenance staff) and donations from local businesses to make the event a success. Donations for the event came from Addison Trail, Zio Tony's Pizza, Uncle Pete's Pizza, Serino's Deli, Pyramid Club, Nardi's Pizza, Aurelio's, Blue Line Grill, Franky's, Giordano's, Pizza Hut, Home Run Inn, Rosati's, Great Lakes Apparel, BOOM Entertainment, A Moon Jump For You, SYSCO, the Orrico family and Bob Smith of the Addison Rotary Club.
