Willowbrook Theatre to present fall musical, ‘Seussical’

Willowbrook Theatre invites you to step into a world of imagination when the school presents its fall musical, “Seussical.”

According to https://www.mtishows.com/seussical, “'Seussical’ is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! (The show brings) to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big imagination – Jojo. The colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.”

“This is a fun, well-written show that’s meant to take the audience away to a place where they can put aside their cares for a while,” said Willowbrook senior Malachy Heneghan (who plays Horton the Elephant) and freshman Andrew Urton (who plays Wickersham Brother 1). “One of the key messages is that the power of imagination should be encouraged, as it helps you see things in many different ways.”

Heneghan and Urton said the show has an operetta-like feel, which is a theatrical form that blends aspects of opera with spoken dialogue, comedic plots and popular, lighthearted music. This style provides an opportunity to enhance the elements of the production – including music, choreography, lighting, set and costumes. They said audience members should take note of all the intricate details throughout the show.

Willowbrook Theatre Director Regina Wathier said she selected “Seussical” because it's a family-friendly show that includes the greater community and makes the performing arts accessible to a younger audience.

"We focused on appealing to parents, with retro Seuss throwbacks that they would remember from their childhoods, and connecting with children through the imagery they read on the pages," Wathier said. "This production allows the actors to adjust their acting style to that which would engage kids, and the technical teams get an opportunity to execute design in costumes, lights, sets, sound and props that are more spirited and vivacious. We also are really excited to debut our new lighting system with the community as well – this new auditorium upgrade will benefit EVERYONE who spends time in that space!"
