Each year, District 88 recognizes Veterans Day, which provides an opportunity to pause and reflect to honor and thank those who have served/plan to serve in the U.S. military.
Veterans Day honors the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918 that signaled the end of World War I, known as Armistice Day. District 88 remains open on this day to help ensure students learn about the significance of this event.
This year, Willowbrook students participated in a Veterans Day field trip. On Nov. 11, 89 students and nine staff members visited the First Division Museum at Cantigny Park in Wheaton. Participants learned about the experiences of and conditions served in by American soldiers during World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War. They also learned about the technology that goes into tanks the U.S. Army has used throughout the last 108 years. The museum features interactive displays and activities, including walking through a World War I trench, boarding a landing craft and climbing onto a tank.
The field trip was a collaboration between Willowbrook’s U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) Department and Social Studies Department to provide a shared learning experience for students who have enrolled in the school’s new JROTC program for second semester and those currently studying U.S. History.
Willowbrook also lined the entryway to the school with American flags to honor and recognize Veterans Day (pictured above).
