The Addison Trail Theatre Department invites you to experience a beloved, classic story that shows the healing power of music and the importance of family and standing up for your beliefs. The school will present its winter musical, “The Sound of Music,” on Feb. 8, 9 and 10.

According to https://stageagent.com/shows/musical/579/the-sound-of-music, “Based on the true story of the Von Trapp Family Singers, this play captures a personal tale of growth and hope amidst the horrors of World War II. ‘The Sound of Music’ tells the tale of young postulant Maria Rainer, whose free spirit has trouble fitting into the rules and regulations of Nonnberg Abbey. Commissioned by the Mother Abbess to serve as the governess for seven motherless children, Maria transforms the Von Trapp family home from a place of dour rules and regulations to one filled with joy, with laughter and with music. In the process, Maria wins the hearts of all seven children – and their widower father, Captain Von Trapp. Their Austrian convictions compel Maria, the Captain and the children to flee over the mountains of Switzerland to safety, taking the words of the Mother Abbess to heart: ‘Climb Every Mountain … till you find your dream.’”

Addison Trail Theatre Director Anna McSweeney said she’s thrilled to bring this production to the school’s stage, as it offers students the opportunity to experience a different and challenging genre.

“‘The Sound of Music’ is such a traditional show, filled with beautiful and nostalgic songs,” McSweeney said. “It’s the perfect way to recognize and celebrate the final musical of Music Department Head Mark Corey, who will retire at the end of this school year.”

McSweeney added that along with the 30 Addison Trail students who comprise the cast, eight children from the community also will take the stage as some of the younger Von Trapp family members.

Addison Trail junior Alexandra Marcinkowski (who plays Maria), junior Nathan Redmann (who plays Captain Von Trapp) and senior Jack DiDomenic (who plays Rolf) said the cast members are enjoying the change of pace provided by this show, and they’re thrilled to be part of this production.

“It’s wholesome and family oriented,” they said. “We hope the adults in the audience relate to this familiar story, and we’re excited to bring it to the next generation in the audience as well.”
