Christopher Vazquez has been named as Willowbrook’s November recipient of 88’s Best recognition for his highly improved performance. Vazquez, a senior, was recognized during the Nov. 18 District 88 Board of Education meeting. To watch his 88’s Best presentation, click the video above.

Throughout his high school career, Vazquez has enrolled in a variety of courses, including those that provide assistance for his learning needs. While his first semesters presented challenges, he has embraced each one and continuously improved his academic performance while participating in school activities.

That improvement has culminated in Vazquez earning Honor Roll status both semesters of his junior year, and he is on track to do the same this year. He also serves as a mentor for students at Willowbrook, is a lead practicum teacher in the Little Warrior Preschool program, has earned multiple career certificates and credentials and is a member of the Varsity Football Team.

Many staff members at Willowbrook who have worked with Vazquez say what makes him stand out is his positive attitude and ability to overcome obstacles and succeed in the face of adversity. Below are a few of their comments.

“I have had the privilege of working with Vazquez over the last three years, and I am truly impressed with the growth I have seen in him. He shows great concern with his academics and not only wanting to make himself proud with success in the classroom, but also his teachers and family. Vazquez is one of the kindest students I have met. He is genuinely concerned about the well-being of others and will go out of his way to make sure they are smiling. Vazquez has learned over the last three years to not let the challenges life presents keep you from pursuing your goals. He faces the challenge and looks for other ways to go about conquering it. This attitude helps him keep his focus on his next chapter in life. The passion he has for education has encouraged him to continue his journey and share this enthusiasm with others. Vazquez plans on pursuing a degree in elementary education, with a focus on being a special education teacher.”

- Kim Mikesell, Willowbrook Guidance Counselor

“After teaching Vazquez in English, he has been on my caseload for some time. He has set goals, exceeded expectations and developed a plan (academic, sports, personal) that he can be proud of. I have no doubt Vazquez will continue to meet his goals after Willowbrook. He is a true example of a Warrior that I will be proud of for many years to come.”

- Bernie Nash, Willowbrook Learning Services teacher

“Vazquez has become a determined and motivated student, who really supports the purpose and mission of the school. In the past three years, he has never failed to say hello to me in the hall, participate in a spirit day or use the school’s community to support himself. He has truly shown what Willowbrook High School can do for students when you embrace the community.”

- Kate Wilson, Willowbrook English teacher

“Vazquez had some struggles during Human Geography freshman year. The thing that set him apart was that he was always willing to struggle through and get back up and keep moving forward. Through ups and downs, he never quit and always managed to get to the next ‘up.’ Vazquez has shown great strength and perseverance to accomplish what he has so far, and he will continue moving forward to even greater things.”

- Pete Montgomery, Willowbrook social studies teacher

Vazquez intends to continue his education at Lake Forest College or College of DuPage, where he plans to pursue a career as an elementary school teacher.
