District 88 to host workshops for parents and family members of students with disabilities

District 88 is hosting a free program called NEXT STEPS: The Transition Series, which provides training for parents and family members of students with disabilities. The NEXT STEPS training team of DuPage County will offer four workshops from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at District 88 (2 Friendship Plaza in Addison). Below are details about each session.

April 12 – Transition Plans: Roadmaps to the Future
IDEA requires transition planning for all students with disabilities. Participants will learn how transition planning can be incorporated into students' ongoing special education plans. The influence of competency testing, graduation requirements, diplomas, integration and curriculum emphasis on transition plans will be discussed.

April 19 – Moving On: Life in the Community
As young adults with disabilities leave high school, what opportunities are available for them to lead active and fulfilling lives? Community service representatives will provide information about community college, independent living, transportation, structured day activity programs and recreation options.

April 26 – Preparing for Work While in School
Speakers will discuss specific examples of community-based work experiences and vocational education opportunities. A mother and her daughter also will describe how they have set up a small business. Participants will learn how reasonable accommodations, job coaches and supports in the workplace assist a student in learning, enjoying and keeping a job.

May 3 – Planning Ahead: Future Finances and Supports
This presentation will focus on setting up finances to protect and provide for family members with a disability. Other areas that will be discussed include public benefits, Social Security support, guardianship and how to plan effectively. Materials will include information about writing a “letter of intent” and setting up supports.

The workshops are designed to be individual trainings. Participants may register for one or for all of the workshops in the series. Registration is required and can be completed online at http://tinyurl.com/z5kzu2w.
