On Sept. 17, District 88 hosted its first Parents of Black Scholars (PBS) event. To view more photos from the event, click on the image above (or go to www.dupage88.net/PBSEventPhotosSeptember2025).
During the evening, families enjoyed dinner, conversation and a variety of information stations with school and community resources that are available for students and parents/guardians. The purpose of PBS is to actively engage, empower and advocate for the success and well-being of students by strengthening the connection between families, staff and the district. The goal is to create a community of support that ensures scholars have every opportunity to thrive academically, socially and beyond.
More than 125 parents, students and staff members attended, and participants were welcomed by District 88 Superintendent Dr. Jean Barbanente. District 88 Student Success Coordinator VaLarie Humphrey (who hosted the event) also presented about the organizations, programs, special events and initiatives that take place at the schools to recognize, celebrate and support black students at Addison Trail and Willowbrook. Parents of Black Scholars (PBS) will meet several times throughout the school year, and all District 88 parents/guardians of black students are invited to join the group. For questions or more information, contact Dr. Humphrey at vhumphrey@dupage88.net or 630-628-3308.
