At District 88, we are committed to fostering an environment where every student can achieve academic excellence and personal growth. A key component of this commitment is regular school attendance. Consistent attendance is not merely about fulfilling a requirement; it plays a crucial role in a student's overall success and future opportunities. We are committed to partnering with families to make sure all District 88 students are in school, where they can thrive and meet their goals.
Academic Achievement
Research consistently demonstrates a strong link between regular attendance and academic performance. Students who attend school consistently are more likely to perform better in reading and math, setting a solid foundation for future learning. Conversely, absenteeism in early grades has been associated with lower achievement levels in later years.
Long-Term Success
The impact of regular attendance extends beyond the classroom. Students who attend school regularly are 2.5 times more likely to graduate from high school, paving the way for higher education and better career prospects. Furthermore, students who drop out of high school often exhibit a history of chronic absenteeism, highlighting the importance of consistent attendance from an early age.
Social and Emotional Benefits
Attending school regularly allows students to engage fully in classroom activities, build meaningful relationships with peers and teachers, and develop essential life skills. These experiences contribute to a positive self-image and better social integration, which are vital for personal development.
Understanding Truancy
Truancy refers to unexcused absences from school and is a serious concern with significant implications. According to the DuPage Regional Office of Education, a "truant" is defined as a student who is absent without valid cause for more than 1%, but less than 5%, of the past 180 days. A "chronic truant" is a student who is absent without valid cause for 5% or more of the past 180 days. In the most serious cases, some chronically truant students can face fines and legal consequences. Our goal is always prevention and support, and every effort is made to help our students succeed.
Communication Regarding Attendance
District 88 parents/guardians will receive a weekly e-mail with an individualized report on their child's attendance, including the number of excused and unexcused absences, tardies and any truancy information. This proactive communication aims to keep families informed and engaged in supporting their child's consistent school attendance.
We understand challenges may arise that impact attendance. Our schools are equipped with resources and support systems to assist families in overcoming these obstacles. We encourage open communication with school staff to ensure every student has the opportunity to benefit from regular attendance. Together, we can create a supportive environment that emphasizes the importance of being present, engaged and ready to learn every day.
