Addison Trail and Willowbrook participate in annual West Suburban Conference Sports Spectacular

On May 3, Addison Trail hosted the annual West Suburban Conference Sports Spectacular.

During the event, about 600 students with special needs and their staff filled Addison Trail’s field house, gyms and black box studio theatre. The students were from 16 schools in the West Suburban Conference, including Willowbrook. The pupils participated in basketball, volleyball, indoor golf and more. They also enjoyed carnival games, karaoke and tasty treats. The event began with an introduction of the schools in attendance.

The Sports Spectacular was founded in 1994 by a group of West Suburban Conference athletic directors. Retired Addison Trail physical education teacher Sheri D’Ambrose wanted to continue the event to offer students an atmosphere of fun, and Rob Schader (Addison Trail Physical Education Department Head) looks forward to keeping the event going for years to come. D’Ambrose said it takes the following to make the Sports Spectacular a success each year:

  • More than 100 volunteers (including Addison Trail students, staff and parents/guardians)

  • Donations from the following businesses for food and refreshments
    • Pyramid Pizzeria
    • Nardi’s Tower of Pizza
    • Uncle Pete’s Pizza Shop
    • Sysco (donated all paper products)
    • Addison Trail culinary students baked and donated 650 brownies for dessert
  • Discounted T-shirts from Great Lakes Apparel

  • Participant awards from Trophies By George

  • Disc jockey services provided by Addison Trail seniors Ninmar Mirza and Vincenzo Gagliano

  • National Anthem sung by Addison Trail alumna Nina Vargas

  • Support from the District 88 and Addison Trail administration, as well as Addison Trail’s Student Council and Art Club

  • Support from RUSH Physical Therapy
