Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)

At District 88, the safety and well-being of students and staff is our No. 1 priority. We continue to carefully monitor developments regarding coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and are working with the DuPage Regional Office of Education, the DuPage County Health Department and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) to ensure the safest environment at our buildings.

We will share updates on this page as more information becomes available. The content below is provided by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and DuPage County Health Department.

What is coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)?
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is responding to an outbreak of respiratory disease caused by a novel (new) coronavirus that was first detected in China and which has now been detected in almost 90 locations internationally, including in the United States. The virus has been named “SARS-CoV-2,” and the disease it causes has been named “coronavirus disease 2019” (abbreviated “COVID-19”).

For answers to frequently asked questions, go to https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/faq.html.

How does COVID-19 spread?
The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person. It might be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. The virus that causes COVID-19 seems to be spreading easily and sustainably in the community (“community spread”) in some affected geographic areas. Community spread means people have been infected with the virus in an area, including some who are not sure how or where they became infected.

How can the spread of COVID-19 be prevented?

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, and then throw the tissue away.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • See a full list at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/index.html

What are the symptoms related to COVID-19?
The following symptoms might appear 2 to 14 days after exposure.

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath

What are the steps to take if you have COVID-19 symptoms?
If you think you have been exposed to COVID-19 and develop a fever and symptoms of respiratory illness such as cough or difficulty breathing, call your health care provider immediately. See more details and advice at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/steps-when-sick.html.

What are the travel guidelines regarding COVID-19?
CDC has established geographic risk-stratification criteria for the purpose of issuing travel health notices for countries with COVID-19 transmission and guiding public health management decisions for people with potential travel-related exposures to COVID-19. A number of factors inform the geographic risk stratification, including size, geographic distribution and epidemiology of the outbreak. Go to https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/index.html to get country-specific travel health information about COVID-19.

What is DuPage High School District 88 doing to help prevent the spread of COVID-19?
At District 88, the safety and well-being of students and staff is our No. 1 priority. We continue to carefully monitor developments regarding COVID-19 and are working with the DuPage Regional Office of Education, the DuPage County Health Department and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) to ensure the safest environment at our buildings. At this time, the IDPH recommends schools continue with regularly scheduled classes and events. A top priority at District 88 is the sanitization and cleanliness of the facilities. As part of our standard practice, our Buildings and Grounds staff members:

  • Regularly check hand sanitizer dispensers in all classrooms to make sure they’re full
  • Spray door handles and locker handles/locks with disinfectant on a regular basis
  • Use disinfecting wipes or soap and water to clean student desks, common areas and cafeteria tables
  • Disinfect all restrooms (walls, floors and plumbing fixtures) on a regular basis
  • As an extra measure of protection during the winter months, and given the concern about COVID-19, we also are using a disinfectant to fog classrooms
