District 88 celebrates national ranking for diverse student population

At District 88, we have a rich level of diversity that enriches the positive learning environment of our schools.

We have about 40 languages and more than 30 countries represented among our families, and almost half of the nearly 4,000 students at District 88 speak a language other than English at home. Our students come from various backgrounds, and embracing that diversity has led to continued success in the classroom and beyond. It is the goal of District 88 to provide a high-quality educational experience for all students to ensure each child has the opportunity to reach his or her full potential.

We know having a variety of cultures is one of the greatest assets of District 88. Niche recently released its “2016 Most Diverse School Districts” ranking, and we’re proud to have District 88 listed as No. 2 in Illinois and No. 42 in the U.S. According to http://rebootillinois.com, “The three pillars of a good school district are academics, athletics and diversity.”

The Niche ranking provides a comprehensive assessment of the diversity and culture of a school district. It takes into account key factors such as the ethnic composition of the student body and the proportion of students who receive free or reduced lunches, as well as student and parent reviews, in an attempt to measure the cultural diversity of the district.

Niche used three factors to determine a school district’s rating:

The percentage of students belonging to the most represented ethnicity
Parent and student surveys on the student culture and diversity
The percent of students who qualify for a free or reduced lunch
