District 88 hosts second annual BLACKtopia experience, designed to support and inspire Black students

The BLACKtopia experience is designed to empower Black high school students by helping them explore their potential, unlock their talents and embrace their unique identities. It features motivational speakers; engaging workshops; and opportunities for personal growth, academic excellence and leadership development.

This year’s theme was CAMO: Conquering Adversity and Moving Onward, and participants enjoyed:

• A Black-Owned Business & Career Expo (with about 20 vendors)
  
  
• Step Team entertainment provided by Downers Grove South
  
  
• A panel discussion with local Black judges
  
  
• A session focused on financial literacy (sponsored by U.S. Bank)
  
  
• A session focused on high school career connection and college conversation
  
  
• A presentation about the district’s new U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) program

The event was coordinated by District 88 Student Success Coordinator Dr. VaLarie Humphrey, and sponsors were:
