REQUIRED COURSESEnglishEvery student must take and pass four years of English in sequence. SpeechEvery student must take and pass one semester of Speech or Speech/Technology, which may be used to the English requirement. MathematicsAll students are required to take and pass three years of mathematics. All students must take one year of math that includes algebraic thinking and one year of math that includes geometric thinking. ScienceEvery student must successfully complete three years of science: one year in biology, one year in a physical science, or one year of chemistry. Counselors will help choose science course(s) based on science background, vocational/career objectives, and the recommendation of the Science Department. Social StudiesEvery student is required to successfully complete one year of U.S. History, one semester of Government, one semester Economics, and one year of Global Studies, World History, or World Geography. The United States and Illinois Constitution exams, which are given in the U.S. Government classes, must be passed in order for a student to graduate. General Education RequirementsAll students are required to pass three semesters from the following subjects: world language, art, family & consumer science, industry & technology, business education, or music. Students must successfully complete 3 credits in general education in the following manner: a. One credit from fine arts, which includes a world language, music, or art course. b. One credit from an applied art, which includes a business, family & consumer science, industry & technology, or science vocational course. c. One additional credit from either a or b above ** Note: The Consumer Education course requirement does not meet the applied art general education requirement. Physical Education Illinois School Code requires daily physical education for all students. All District 88 students will be scheduled into a PE class every semester. Health and Driver’s Ed count as PE classes under the School Code. PE classes carry full credit, grade point average, and rank. Students can count PE credits towards elective credit for graduation. Reading Students must take a reading test when they enter Addison Trail or Willowbrook prior to their placement in courses. District 88 establishes cut scores on the Reading Placement exam; based on these cut scores, some students may be placed into a reading intervention, which may include a separate course. Consumer Education The Consumer Education requirement may be met through one of the following options: Introduction to Business, Consumer Management (offered by the Business and the Family and Consumer Education departments), or by passing the State Consumer Education Proficiency Test. This test is given in October and January, and students must register for the test with the Director of Guidance. Students may take the test only once during the year and cannot be currently enrolled in a consumer education course. REQUIRED PERFORMANCES: Constitution Test Information Literacy Sampling Health Proficiency Project Educational Plan An educational plan will be required for all students. A counselor will meet with each student to prepare a realistic plan based: on the student and parent's educational and vocational goals. Transportation: Students who elect to take a course at the Technology Center of DuPage will have transportation provided by the district. Students who elect Invitation to Teaching or Medical Careers will need to provide their own transportation. Credits/year Students in District 88 are evaluated for year in school based upon the number of credits they have earned*. Freshman Status 0 to 10 credits Sophomore Status 11 to 21 credits Junior Status 22 to 32 credits Senior Status 33 to completion of graduation requirements *The evaluation of credits for determining year in school will take place during the month of September.
