Grade Weighting Scale

The course as well as the grade earned determines how many honor points a student receives toward class rank. Class rank is used primarily for college admission. Students will be able to earn an A, B, C, D, or F in all classes. Students who take more challenging courses are able to earn additional honor points. Thus, a student who enrolls in four high weighted courses and receives one A, two B’s and one C at the end of the semester will have a 4.00 grade point average, whereas another student with the same grades, but is in all regular courses, would have a 3.00 grade point average. This would give the student in the high weighted courses a higher class rank and a better chance for college admission. High weighted courses are identified with a + in the course outlines and on the report cards.

                                                     A      B    C      D       F

High weighted courses       5pt  4pt  3pt   2pt  0pt

Regular weighted courses   4pt  3pt  2pt  1pt  0pt

Students must be enrolled in a minimum of four academic courses to be considered for the honor roll. The Distinction Honor Roll requires a grade point average of at least 3.5 for the marking period in academic courses only, and all grades must be an A or B. The Merit Honor Roll requires an average of 3.0 to 3.49. No student with the grade of I is given honor roll status until the work is completed. Sophomores may be elected to the Junior Honor Society and Juniors and Seniors may be elected to the National Honor Society on the basis of scholarship, leadership, service and character. The entire faculty is involved in the selection process.

*Beginning with the class of 2002 all students must be enrolled in a minimum of four classes to be considered for the honor roll.
