MISSION STATEMENT

The Addison Trail High School Business Education Department seeks to promote skill development, foster positive attitudes necessary to succeed in the workforce, develop ethical and social business conduct, and increase success in college programs in the field of business.   Business courses enable students to think and make decisions, simulate real world experiences, and apply academic/core subject matter to real work situations.

Students have the opportunities to prepare for current and emerging careers.  The department members instill ethical use of computers and other modern technology.  Students will develop a general understanding of how the American economy operates and the role business plays in the economic well-being of this country.   Students expand necessary life skills to become useful members of society.

BUSINESS DEPARTMENT EXTENSION EXPERIENCES

Students enrolled in Business courses have many opportunities to extend their knowledge, skills, and learning beyond the classroom.  Students can participate in national youth organizations, Business Professionals of America (BPA) and DECA a Marketing Student Organization.  These organizations allow students to use their skills learned in courses to participate in competitive events at the Area, State, and National level.   Students develop their leadership skills while making connections from the classroom.

Economics Principles and Practices (a senior level course—Economics credit) works cooperatively with Junior Achievement to develop and run their own company.  Hotel/Restaurant/Travel/Tourism taught cooperatively with Family & Consumer makes weekly visits to area businesses of the hospitality industry (visits during the two hours class period of instruction).  Field trip experiences and guest speakers play a major role of connecting business curriculum to the real world in all courses.

Extra Curriculars That Support Academic Excellence in the
Classroom at Addison Trail High School

Today's students. Tomorrow's business professionals. DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) and BPA (Business Professionals of America) are two successful business clubs that are flourishing at Addison Trail High School.

DECA is a national association of marketing students. The mission of DECA is to enhance the education of students with interests in marketing, management, and entrepreneurship. DECA can be found in every state of the United States, in four U.S. territories, and in Canada. Chapters exist in high schools, career centers, community colleges, technical colleges, four-year colleges and universities, and private and parochial schools. Students compete in competitions, take part in community service projects, and can obtain scholarships through membership in the organization.   In April 2007, two members of the Addison Trail’s DECA club attended and competed at the national level in Orlando, Florida.

Business Professionals of America (BPA) is a national student organization for students preparing for careers in business. The mission of BPA is to contribute to the preparation of a world-class workforce through the advancement of leadership, citizenship, academic, and technological skills. By integrating its programs into the business classroom, BPA builds leadership, professionalism, poise, dependability, patriotism, and competency into business students. Students compete on the state and national levels. In May, 2007, ten members of Addison Trail’s BPA club attended and competed at the national level in New York City, New York.
