District 88 participates in Lincoln Award: Illinois Teen Readers’ Choice Award program
District 88 students recently participated in the Lincoln Award: Illinois Teen Readers’ Choice Award program, where students vote for their favorite book from a provided master list.
According to https://www.aisled.org/lincoln.htm, “This program encourages teens to read for pleasure and to become lifelong readers. Named after former (U.S.) President Abraham Lincoln, an avid reader and noted author, the Lincoln Award is sponsored by Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA) and administered by the steering committee.”
The Lincoln Award is given to the book from that year’s master list that earns the highest number of student votes. For a book to reach the master list, adult and young adult fiction and nonfiction titles must be nominated by teachers or librarians and vetted by the nominations committee. While the popularity of a particular title is important, the overall quality of the work is of primary importance. Each year, a panel of high school librarians, teachers, public librarians and students determines the final master list of 20 titles. Registered schools promote these books, and students who have read four or more titles are eligible to vote.
District 88 voted on Feb. 12. Addison Trail voted for “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas, and Willowbrook voted for “Scythe” by Neal Shusterman. As a district, 52 pupils participated in the program – reading a total of 348 books. Participants who read at least four titles from the list were able to enter a raffle to win prizes, and below are the raffle winners.
