Warrior Wellness: An inside look at Willowbrook’s Driver Education department
Willowbrook students are working hard every day to become more educated with their health and wellness, and we are thrilled to showcase those accomplishments through this monthly column.
In this month’s edition of Warrior Wellness, we are proud to highlight our Driver Education department. Driver Education consists of a classroom phase and a behind-the-wheel program. In the classroom phase, students are taught the rigors and responsibilities of driving, while learning the rules of the road. In the behind-the-wheel program, students meet the state standards by completing six hours of on-street driving and six hours of observation.
Inside the classroom
We are halfway through the second semester of the 2017-18 school year, and the first three weeks focused on the permit process. That was followed by students developing basic terminology and skills used in the behind-the-wheel program. Students also have learned about the dangers of texting and being under the influence of alcohol and drugs while driving.
Staff members have worked to create a fun and educational environment in the classroom through providing activities such as having a guest speaker. For example, teachers Eduardo De La Cruz and Brandon Murphy recently reached out to Willowbrook’s School Resource Officer Bryan Hruby to speak with students. During the presentation (pictured above), Hruby discussed what to do in a normal traffic stop and the laws on texting, zero tolerance and seatbelts. He also answered questions from the class. The positive feedback from students and their engagement and participation during the presentation was special to witness.
The second half of the semester will focus on preparing pupils to pass their driver’s license exams.
Sign up for behind-the-wheel summer school sessions
It’s not too late to sign up for behind-the-wheel summer school sessions.
When: Summer school will take place from June 4 to 28. Timeslots are available in the Willowbrook Bookstore.
Where: Register at the Willowbrook Bookstore.
Cost: The cost for summer school is $160 for the classroom phase and $220 for the behind-the-wheel program. Waivers aren’t accepted for the summer school sessions.
What participants learn: All Willowbrook Driver Education teachers are state certified, and students will meet the state requirements and be taught the skills necessary to earn their license.
