Counseling Corner: Willowbrook Guidance Department to host College and Career Awareness Week

Throughout the school year, the Willowbrook Guidance Department provides opportunities that help prepare students to be successful in college and careers.

As part of that commitment, the Guidance Department will host its annual College and Career Awareness Week from March 19 to 23. Throughout the week, seniors will have the opportunity to fill out a sticker with the name of the college/university or military branch they plan to attend and add it to a poster in the foyer. Next to that area will be information provided by faculty and staff about their education background, careers, interesting/notable facts and advice to their high school self.

On March 19, the Willowbrook Career and Technical Education (CTE) department will facilitate lunch activities that focus on the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) field. Students – be sure to look for the STEM tables in the lunchroom to complete a marshmallow and paper bridge challenge and even work with a 3-D printer.

On March 20, representatives from the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard and National Guard will meet with students during a Military Fair to discuss what each branch has to offer with regard to post-high school options. Students also will have the opportunity to take the ASVAB test, which is a multiple-aptitude battery that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military.

On March 21, representatives from about 60 colleges and universities will visit Willowbrook to speak with students about their respective campus during a College and Vocational Fair. Students will be able to ask questions directly and will receive information about their various post-high school options. An Essay-Writing Workshop will take place that day during Warrior Time to help students prepare for their college essays. On March 22, about 25 career professionals and local businesses will share their insight and experience in various fields with students during Willowbrook’s Career and Vocational Fair. A Résumé Workshop also will take place that day during Warrior Time for students. To see a list of the careers that are scheduled to be represented, go to www.dupage88.net/WBCareerFair2018.

During each fair, students will have the opportunity to complete a passport after they visit the various representatives. They will then submit their passport for a chance to win prizes at the end of the week. Announcements and other fun activities will take place during the week as well to encourage students to get college and career ready.
