Counseling Corner: Willowbrook Guidance Department shares important information regarding course selection for 2018-19 school year

The Willowbrook Guidance Department is committed to making sure students are informed about the various courses available to them at Willowbrook.

As part of that commitment, the department hosted presentations throughout January to share information with students.

  • Jan. 10: Advanced Coursework Lunch and Learn presentation for students regarding Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level and dual-credit courses. This presentation featured alumni who are AP Scholars (read more about this event at https://tinyurl.com/y9prhpxw).

  • Jan. 25: Curriculum Showcase (This event will begin at 6:30 p.m. and is an opportunity for members of the class of 2022 and their parents/guardians to learn about the academic programs offered at Willowbrook. A “Meet the Coaches Night” also will take place at 5:30 p.m. for students to find out more about Willowbrook athletics.)

  • Elective presentations:
    • Jan. 9: Freshmen Elective Presentation, Music
    • Jan. 10: Freshmen Elective Presentation, Art
    • Jan. 11: Freshmen Elective Presentation, Career and Technical Education (CTE)
    • Jan. 16: Sophomores and juniors Elective Presentation, Art
    • Jan. 17: Sophomores and juniors Elective Presentation, Music
    • Jan. 18: Sophomores and juniors Elective Presentation, Career and Technical Education (CTE)

Counselors also will present to sophomores during Warrior Time on Jan. 23, 24 and 26 regarding the course selection process for the 2018-19 school year, and they will present to juniors about that topic during the week of Jan. 30.

Freshmen will meet individually with counselors between Jan. 22 and 26 for a freshman interview and course selection meeting. Sophomores will meet individually with counselors between Feb. 5 and 9 for course selection, and juniors will meet with counselors between Feb. 12 and 16 for a junior interview and course selection meeting. During those meetings, counselors will review teacher recommendations and the student’s college/career plans to guide the course registration process.

The Guidance Department will welcome members of the class of 2022 during their first course selection appointments on Jan. 27 and will conclude those meetings on Feb. 1 and 3.

Course selection is a vital part of a student’s high school career, and parental involvement is essential to assist students in making successful academic choices. The Willowbrook Guidance Department strongly recommends parents/guardians review the District 88 Course Listing Guide with their student. That guide can be viewed online at https://www.dupage88.net/site/page/19 and provides descriptions of classes offered at Willowbrook.

Below are important reminders regarding the registration process:

  • Students should consider their future college/career choices when choosing courses.
  • Students need to be enrolled in at least six periods, plus a lunch.
  • Schedules are computer generated, so counselors are unable to confirm a specific schedule.
  • Course selections will be considered final after Feb. 28.
  • A parent/guardian must sign the student’s course selection form.
  • Naviance is a great tool to assist with the college/career process and to examine course sequence, which can assist students during course selection.
