District 88 celebrates Teen Read Week

From Oct. 9 to 13, Addison Trail and Willowbrook celebrated Teen Read Week.

Activities included an afterschool screening of the movie “The Outsiders” (based on the novel by S.E. Hinton, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year); hosting a “read-in” event, where students and staff spent a resource period reading; and raffling off restaurant gift cards to students who participated in the schools’ Lincoln Award and Read for a Lifetime programs. The raffle winners are:

  • Addison Trail: Freshmen Britney Nakhammouane and Lizbeth Zamora-Sanchez

  • Willowbrook: Freshmen Israel Cruz and Elizabeth Martynenko

Teen Read Week is a national adolescent literacy initiative created by the Young Adult Library Services Association. It began in 1998 and takes place annually in October. Its purpose is to encourage teens to be regular readers and library users. This year’s event featured the theme “Unleash Your Story.” For more information, go to http://teenreadweek.ning.com.
