Counseling Corner: Addison Trail Guidance Department helps students explore career options

As part of its commitment to provide opportunities that help prepare students for post-high school success, the Addison Trail Guidance Department will host its annual Career Week from Oct. 24 to 27.

Throughout the week, business professionals will partner with a classroom to share information about their background, education and daily work life to give insight into a variety of career fields. Teachers will choose speakers who match their subject area to assist students in connecting class instruction to real-world career possibilities. Guest presenters will speak with students about a variety of jobs and answer their questions. This is the fourth year Addison Trail is partnering with Junior Achievement of Chicago to offer representation from companies and organizations throughout the Chicago area.

Last year, nearly 30 speakers presented during Career Week, and 61 classes and 1,188 students participated. Some of the fields that will be represented this year are physical therapy, veterinary science, manufacturing, personal training, chemistry, automotive technology, photography and nutrition/dietician science.

Other recent career exploration opportunities included visits to JD Norman Industries, Inc. and Pioneer Service Inc. in Addison on Oct. 6 as part of Manufacturing Day. To read more about those field trips, go to www.dupage88.net/ManufacturingDay2017.

Guidance counselors also are meeting with each senior student for an individual Senior Interview to assess progress toward graduation and to discuss post-high school college and career goals. Details of that interview will be mailed home to parents/guardians.
