Willowbrook celebrates class of 2021 during Senior Recognition Ceremony

On May 20, Willowbrook hosted a virtual Senior Recognition Ceremony to celebrate the class of 2021.

During the event, seniors were honored for their accomplishments in a variety of areas. Awards and recognitions included academic achievements, leadership and service recognitions, athletic and extracurricular accomplishments and more. Students were highlighted for being named as State Scholars and National Merit Scholarship Program honorees; receiving the Outstanding Senior department awards; earning the Human Relations Award and the State Seal of Biliteracy and more.

Members of the class of 2021 received the Warrior Award, which honors students within the Willowbrook community who have embodied courage, bravery and a spirit of resiliency during their life and high school career. They earned this award for their perseverance and positive attitude as they overcame the adverse impacts of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

The 2020-21 staff retirees were highlighted as well. They are Denise Birkner, Lisa Cuscaden, Corazon Luis, Bernice Nash, Troy Nelson, Patti Reher and Elizabeth Stady. The ceremony was dedicated to the late District 88 Superintendent Dr. Scott Helton, who passed away on Dec. 10, 2020. Dr. Helton had more than 33 years of experience in education and served in a variety of capacities, including as Principal of Addison Trail for 11 years and as Superintendent of District 88 since 2012. He was incredibly ingrained in the District 88 community and helped build positive futures for countless students through his contributions to public education and coaching football, wrestling and track. He will be greatly missed, and his impact and legacy will last for years to come. Dr. Helton also was recognized as an honorary retiree.
