District 88 participates in National Autism Awareness Month

At District 88, our mission is to work for the continuous improvement of student achievement. We are committed to helping each student reach his or her full potential inside the classroom and beyond. As part of that mission, we participate in National Autism Awareness Month each April.

According to www.autism-society.org, “Nearly a quarter-century ago, the Autism Society launched a nationwide effort to promote autism awareness, inclusion and self-determination for all, and (to) assure each person with ASD is provided the opportunity to achieve the highest possible quality of life. National Autism Awareness Month represents an opportunity to promote autism awareness, autism acceptance and to draw attention to (those) facing an autism diagnosis each year.”

Throughout April, District 88 students and staff have helped spread awareness and understanding through a variety of activities, including:

  • Wearing blue on specified days
  • Painting the “Rock” at Willowbrook with an Autism Awareness Month message
  • Providing information about autism during student announcements
  • Decorating school display cases in honor of the month
  • Having collaborative puzzles available in the library media center, to provide an opportunity for students to work together
  • Hosting a “Light It Up for Autism Awareness” day at Willowbrook, where more than 600 students and staff received glow-in-the-dark bracelets after they put an autism ribbon sticker on one of four puzzle-piece posters, which represent the concepts of “Understanding, Acceptance, Appreciation and Inclusion” (pictured below)
