ISBE to conduct third statewide listening tour to gather feedback on ESSA State Plan

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) discusses the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), a new education law that was signed by U.S. President Barack Obama in December 2015. This bipartisan measure reauthorizes the 50-year-old Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), the U.S. national education law and longstanding commitment to equal opportunity for all students, and replaces No Child Left Behind (NCLB). For more information about the ESSA, go to www.ed.gov/essa.

ISBE has conducted two statewide listening tours to gather feedback on the ESSA State Plan and is about to begin a third tour, which will consist of eight stops from Nov. 28 to Dec. 8. Through the listening tour, ISBE, in collaboration with Regional Offices of Education, will continue collecting feedback from all stakeholders on Illinois’ draft plan to implement the new federal education law. ISBE developed the draft ESSA State Plan based on stakeholder feedback received during the two previous tours, as well as hundreds of comments submitted online. View the draft plan online at http://isbe.net/essa. Along with submitting comments in person during the listening tour, stakeholders are encouraged to send comments by e-mail to essa@isbe.net.
