Counseling Corner: Willowbrook Guidance Department welcomes the class of 2021

The Willowbrook Guidance Department is getting ready to welcome the incoming freshmen class of 2021!

On Nov. 12, members of the class of 2021 took the PSAT 8/9 assessment. The results from that exam will be used as a component of the course selection process. From Nov. 29 to Dec. 1, incoming freshmen will visit Willowbrook as part of the school’s annual Step-Up Days. During those visits, students will receive an introduction to Willowbrook from Principal Dan Krause, take a building tour, learn about the Warrior Code and receive important preregistration information.

Students and their parents also are invited to attend Willowbrook’s Curriculum Showcase and Meet the Coaches Night on Jan. 12, 2017. During those events, participants will have the opportunity to learn about the academic courses and various programs offered at the school.

Also in January, each member of the class of 2021 will have a one-on-one meeting with a counselor to select courses for the 2017-18 school year. Families will receive a letter with instructions on how to select an appointment time on one of the following dates: Jan. 21, 2017, Jan. 26, 2017, or Jan. 28, 2017.

During that meeting, counselors will review PSAT 8/9 assessment scores, consider teacher recommendations and consult with students and parents to determine appropriate classes. The conversation might include adding academic supports to the student’s school day, enrolling in electives that align with the career exploration process or registering for honors and/or Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level classes. Course selections will be considered final after Feb. 17, 2017. Families will then receive a mailing in late spring with a list of the selected courses.
