District 88 hosts health-related events as part of School Wellness policy

At District 88, the health and welfare of students and staff are top priorities.

To achieve those goals, the district hosts several events during the year to help ensure the well-being of students and staff.

  • On April 11, Willowbrook hosted its 3rd annual Student Wellness Day, which consisted of booths and stations that provided students with information about various aspects of health, wellness and safety.
  • On Feb. 11, Willowbrook hosted a Young Hearts for Life® (YH4L) Cardiac Screening Program, and Addison Trail hosted that program on Feb. 25. Those events provided students with free electrocardiograms to identify those at risk for heart conditions, and more than 1,500 students were screened.
  • The district’s food service management company meets with and/or solicits input from students and groups with respect to various menu offerings.
  • For staff, District 88 hosted its annual Wellness Screenings, which provide staff members with an opportunity to obtain a comprehensive health screening. Those events took place on April 11 at Willowbrook and on April 18 at Addison Trail.

The above initiatives were implemented as part of District 88’s wellness policy (6:50 School Wellness), which states, “Student wellness, including good nutrition and physical activity, shall be promoted in the District’s educational program, school activities, and meal programs.” The policy outlines goals for nutrition education and nutrition promotion, goals for physical activity, nutrition guidelines for foods available during the school day, guidelines for reimbursable school meals, monitoring and community input.
