Counseling Corner: Willowbrook Guidance Department shares summer school and summer programming options for students

Summer break is a wonderful time for students to relax and enjoy time off, but it also is an opportunity for students to take classes to get ahead in school and to prepare for the future.

The Willowbrook Guidance Department shares several summer classes and opportunities below.

Pre-College Summer Programs and Opportunities: Pre-college summer programs and camps are offered throughout the country to provide high school students with experiences in areas such as science, technology, engineering and math (STEM); health care; art; music and more. Credit Recovery: Willowbrook offers direct instruction and online learning for students who need to make up graduation requirements. Contact the Guidance Department at 630-530-3419 for more information.

College of DuPage (COD): COD offers classes for high school students, along with ACT/SAT prep classes and a College Success Series. See details at http://tinyurl.com/hgvp97k.

College Success Series: Includes a writing workshop, a class on note-taking and outlining, test-taking skills, a critical reading workshop and a common app essay workshop.

ACT Weekend Intensive: Scheduled for the weekend before the ACT exam, this crash course provides students with strategies to prepare for the test. Testing strategies are emphasized, with a brief overview of the math, science, reading and English usage in preparation for the exam.

ACT Customized Test Preparation: Prepare for the ACT exam in a way that best suits your needs. Concentrate on specific subject areas of your choosing, practice under simulated testing conditions and benefit from one-on-one instruction.

SAT Test Preparation: Review math, reading and writing skills in preparation for the SAT exam. Practice using authentic SAT questions.

SAT Strategies: The SAT measures different skills than the ACT. Learn how those two exams vary, and focus on strategies to maximize your SAT test score.

PSAT/NMSQT Test Preparation: If you plan to pursue a college scholarship or early admission, this class prepares you for the PSAT. Comprehensive math and verbal material are covered. Practice the skills needed to excel on this standardized test.
