Willowbrook hosts seminar to provide information and resources regarding addiction

On Sept. 29, Willowbrook hosted a seminar that focused on the topic of addiction. The event, entitled “I Wish I Had Known: An exploration of addiction and its impact on our community,” shared information and tools on dealing with addiction.

More than 70 people attended the seminar, which featured speakers Tom Stamas, College of DuPage staff member and former Director of Serenity House; Chris Miller, College of DuPage staff member and recovering alcoholic; and Nick Gore, DuPage County Health Department staff member and recovering heroin addict.

Stamas provided an overview of addiction, and Miller and Gore shared their stories of overcoming addiction. Gore also discussed what DuPage County is doing to help with the epidemic of substance abuse and addiction – particularly with regard to heroin – that is taking place in the county and throughout Illinois.

Booths with information and resources also were available for participants to visit. Sponsors for the event were District 88, the Villa Park Police Department, State Rep. Deb Conroy, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Villa Park, Christian Church of Villa Park and Christ Church of Oak Brook.

The seminar was part of an ongoing initiative to provide support for community members with regard to addiction, and the next seminar is scheduled for Feb. 18, 2016.
