Willowbrook - Driver Education Obtaining a License

After a student successfully completes Behind the Wheel, the instructor will submit the completion to the Driver Education secretary. The secretary will enter the completion into the Illinois State Board of Education system for approval. Allow approximately a week for this approval. It is recommended that the student verify the approval before going to the DMV to get their license.

In order to obtain a driver’s license a student must:

  • Pass Driver Education classroom
  • Pass Behind the Wheel (or wait until they are 18 years old)
  • Have their permit for 9 months
  • Complete 50 hours (10 at night) of driving practice
  • Be at least 16 years old

A student must successfully complete both Driver Education classroom and Behind the Wheel in order to obtain their driver’s license before the age of 18. After the age of 18, a student is not required to complete Behind the Wheel. Any student waiting until the age of 18 to obtain their driver’s license will be required by the DMV to show proof that they successfully completed Driver Education classroom.
