This school year, Addison Trail students had the opportunity to participate in a new initiative called the “College-Bound Buddy” program.
Through that program, Addison Trail students who are Blazer Ambassadors met with kindergarten students from Army Trail Elementary School three times throughout the school year. During their visits, participants talked about their future plans, took a tour of each school and created college-oriented arts-and-craft projects while enjoying snacks. In between meetings, the students stayed in touch as pen pals. About 90 students from each school are involved in the program. The focus of “College-Bound Buddies” is to expose the younger students to the idea that post-secondary education is an obtainable goal.
Their last visit of the 2014-15 school year was on May 28 at Army Trail, during which the students made college pendants. The message was if you work hard at Army Trail and then at Addison Trail, you’ll have a world of opportunities ahead of you. The kindergartners gave their buddies a keychain with Army Trail’s mascot, a Beaver. On the keychain was the theme of the program: “Beaver + Blazer = The World.” Both schools look forward to continuing the program next year.
