District 88 celebrates African-American History Month

Throughout the month of February, Addison Trail and Willowbrook students and staff have been participating in events to celebrate African-American History Month.

Addison Trail

  • A PowerPoint presentation that shares the history, accomplishments and contributions of African-Americans is being displayed throughout the month at the school.
  • Addison Trail students will participate in the Black Student Leadership Conference on Feb. 24 at College of DuPage. During that conference, students will learn leadership skills and will receive information about the college admission process and pursuing a career.
  • Addison Trail students also will attend the Black Women’s Expo from March 27 to 29 at McCormick Place in Chicago.
  • The Addison Trail Black Student Union designed a T-shirt to promote African-American History Month.

Willowbrook

  • Information about the history, accomplishments and contributions of African-Americans is being shared with students and staff through announcements every Monday during the month.
  • Willowbrook students will participate in the Black Student Leadership Conference on Feb. 24 at College of DuPage. During that conference, students will learn leadership skills and will receive information about the college admission process and pursuing a career.
  • A spirit week to celebrate African-American History Month took place from Feb. 9 to 13.
  • Students designed a T-shirt to promote African-American History Month.

Students also were given the opportunity to see the movie “Selma” on Feb. 12 at Marcus Cinema in Addison, along with District 88 staff and administrators. Several local officials and legislators joined the students for that viewing. They are Addison Mayor Rich Veenstra, Addison Police Department Director of Police Timothy "Bill" Hayden, State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-46th District) and State Rep. Kathy Willis (D-77th District).
